The Santa Fe Community Foundation gives Piñon Awards to nonprofit organizations that have made extraordinary contributions to the community. In 2011, the NMELC received the the Quiet Inspiration Award - given to an "un-sung hero" organization whose hallmark is to work quietly and respectfully among a wide range of people in the community.
Staff attorney Bruce Frederick and client Dr. John Fogarty, president of New Energy Economy, were presented the 2010 Climate Courage Award for their joint effort petitioning the NM Environmental Improvement Board to implement statewide limits on human induced climate change pollution.
The annual award "recognizes the achievements of the most respected representatives of New Mexico's legal profession." The award will be presented on June 11, 2009.
Law Center Executive Director Douglas Meiklejohn (class of 1971) will be presented an award for Exemplary Public Service.
"The Impact Fund is proud to honor the New Mexico Environmental Law Center for its outstanding environmental justice work on behalf of Native Americans, Latinos and other under-represented communities."
Chapter 6101 honors [Law Center Staff Attorney] Bruce Frederick for working diligently on getting the Ethanol Plant banned from Curry County, Clovis New Mexico.
"The William F. Weakhee Award is presented to the New Mexico Environmental Law Center for your exceptional support of the SAGE Council and commitment to the struggle of protecting sacred places of prayer."
Awarded "for inspiration and leadership on environmental health issues in New Mexico."
