A legal group is working to hold a troubled Borderland water utility accountable for a slew of systemic failures that residents say stretch back years.

Residents in Sunland Park and Santa Teresa, New Mexico — with the New Mexico Environmental Law Center (NMELC) at the helm –are urging the Department of Justice and the State Auditor to investigate the Camino Real Regional Utility Authority, or CRRUA.

The NMELC filed a request on behalf of residents in both communities, alleging that CRRUA has violated numerous environmental and consumer protection laws.

Residents said they’ve been dealing with unsafe water for years, and despite receiving money from the government, NMELC said CRRUA has failed to fix the problem.

Instead, the water utility has raised its rates, passing the costs onto consumers. …
