Crownpoint-Churchrock IACHR Petition

LOCATION: Crownpoint, Churchrock
OPPOSING PARTIES:
INITIATION DATE: 2011
STATUS: On-going
CLIENTS/PARTNERS: Eastern Navajo Diné Against Uranium Mining (ENDAUM)
ATTORNEYS: Eric Jantz

SUMMARY:

Since 1996, the Law Center has represented the Eastern Navajo Diné Against Uranium Mining (ENDAUM) in its successful bid to prevent new uranium mining in and near Diné (Navajo) communities. The decades-long fight has moved from local to national to international arenas. In 2011, NMELC asked the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to investigate human rights violations perpetrated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and U.S. government when they licensed new uranium mines in Church Rock and Crownpoint. If allowed to open, these mines would irreversibly contaminate groundwater and increase radioactive contamination in air that already exceeds federal standards.
